The display is fair, though not high enough to really compete with the Nexus. Launcher support is not complete and a limited number of alternate launchers will work.

With root access you may install various launchers like Apex Launcher, Nova Launcher, Go Launcher Ex, and ADW Launcher. Most apps from the store are compatible with the Kindle Fire HD, with the exception of some of the device specific stuff.

When all of the annoying Amazon features have been removed and the Google Play store is installed though, is where it truly begins to shine.Īfter installing a new launcher and the Play store, the Kindle Fire HD will get almost all the power of a full android tablet. Rooting the device with a locked bootloader makes everything that would be a walk in the park a total nightmare. You need external apps to play the others. It only plays a very limited number of file types.

You would think that a device that is designed for playing media like this would have a more advanced codec. The stock media player is also horrendous. I just can't forgive Amazon for that pain. It would be fine if it was optional, but they made it the focus of the entire operating system. The carousel is one of the most uninventive and painfully useless home screens I have ever seen. When you are sitting at 5% for 15 to 20 pages, you feel no sense of progression towards the end of the book. It does however give you a percentage, which can be outright useless when you are reading an 800+ page book. NOPE! Yep that's right, nothing like page numbers. When you buy books, you would think that a device that is made to read books would give you something like umm. The appstore has everything you don't want, and nothing you do. Its like Google Play, just with everything that makes it great gutted out. Instead of producing this amazing Dolby sound that Amazon claims, sometimes you just get a loud low quality sound experience. The backward facing speakers can be obnoxiously loud at times. So 2 out of the 4 orientations will have the volume buttons backwards and you will often find yourself decreasing the volume when you want to increase it or vice versa. They are oriented with landscape in mind. The volume buttons also take on a peculiar setup. The power button is often times hard to find, you will generally slide you finger across the sides until you hit it. The volume and power buttons are very well integrated into the design, but this is both a blessing and major flaw. To start off, the outside looks really streamlined, a really good step up from the original Fire.
